Guitar Hero III Mobile (formerly Guitar Hero Mobile)[2] is a mobile music video game based on Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock created by MachineWorks and published by Hands-On Mobile for wireless phones. It is the first title in the Guitar Hero Mobile series released on cellular devices that run on BREW (released December 4, 2007), J2ME (ported March 3, 2008), BlackBerry (ported April 1, 2008) or Windows Mobile (ported April 9, 2008)[1] operating systems.

Guitar Hero III Mobile was a huge success, taking place as Verizon Wireless's most downloaded game with nearly 1 million downloads within the first quarter of 2008.[3]

A second edition of the game titled Guitar Hero III Mobile: Song Pack 1 released in October 2008 for BREW and J2ME mobile platforms, containing 15 downloadable songs from February 2008 to July 2008 as part of its offline Career mode. On contrary to the title name, a Song Pack 2 was never released.

Guitar Hero III Mobile's gameplay

Guitar Hero III Mobile uses three lanes of notes (Green, Red, and Yellow) instead of five lanes (Green, Red, Yellow, Blue, and Orange) that console Guitar Hero games use. There are basic notes, long notes, and 2-note chords. Successfully hitting notes adds points to the player's score.

Every ten notes increases the score multiplier up to four times, which can be doubled up to eight times by activating Star Power after accumulating enough Star Power enough. However, there is no whammy button to accumulate more Star Power energy through sustain notes but additional Star Power can be gained while in Star Power like in newer Guitar Hero games, unlike Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and earlier games where activating Star Power deactivates other Star Power phrases until the end of Star Power.

The controls are as followed:

  • Hit green notes: 1, 4, or 7
  • Hit red notes: 2, 5, or 8
  • Hit yellow notes: 3, 6, or 9
  • Activate Star Power: * or OK
  • Pause: Left Softkey

Tip: You can hold fret buttons while still playing other notes to the left or right of the held fret without breaking your combo.

This game also features two playable characters Judy Nails and Axel Steel, as well as four guitars (three unlocked by completing each career difficulty) and 15 achievements.

There may also be bugs in the game. Example: If you sustain a long note past its line in Guitar Hero III Mobile or Song Pack 1 at the end of a song, the game will register the held buttons as an "overstrum" (songs will be registered as 100% FC but music will cut off). Also, the bars on the highway may misalign with the notes. Thsee issues were fixed in later mobile games.
