James Hetfield (born James Alan Hetfield in August 3, 1963, in Downey, CA) is one the founding members of the thrash metal band Metallica. He is also the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist.
[edit] Personal life
Like some great rock gods such as Eddie Van Halen and Jon Bon Jovi, Hetfield didn't start out playing guitar. In fact, he took up piano at an early age and eventually moved to drums. When he grew to be a teenager he discovered playing guitar. He liked the guitar a lot and the band Aerosmith encouraged him to keep playing.
Once Hetfield got good at guitar he started a few bands who played local shows and in bars. Although one band that he was in, made a couple demos, but the drummer left which drove the other members to do the same. All alone, Hetfield decided to search for a new band where he befriended Metallica's soon-to-be drummer Lars Ulrich. They tried to come up with a line-up for the band and that took quite some time to get right. Then it all came together with James on vocals and guitar, Ulrich on drums, soon-to-be Megadeth guitarist Dave Mustaine on lead guitar, and last with Ron McGovney on bass guitar.
[edit] Trivia
- Hetfield occasionally skateboards in his free time. He has broken his wrist twice while skating.
- During a show with Guns n' Roses in Montreal, Canada, in August 8, 1992, (at the beginning of Fade to Black), Hetfield stood in the way of what was supposed to be a pyrotechnic display and caught fire. He states that his guitar saved him from what could have been, and that he was back on tour in just over 2 weeks.
