Kirk Hammett is the lead guitarist of the thrash metal band Metallica. He will be available as a playable character in the upcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica, slated for release on March 29, 2009 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii, and May, 2009 for PlayStation 2. Though he apparently recorded a Guitar Battle track for the game, as Slash and Tom Morello did for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Joe Perry did for Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, it does not appear in the final game. In 2003, Hammett was named the 11th greatest guitarist of all time by music magazine Rolling Stone.
[edit] Biography
Kirk Lee Hammett was born on November 18, 1962 in San Francisco, CA. He is of Filipino and Irish descent.
He got his first guitars as a child and teenager, and learned to play under Joe Satriani's tutelage. Hammett was one of the founding members of the influential thrash metal band Exodus, recording a demo with them in 1982, this demo remaining the only Exodus work featuring Hammett as a member. He has been with Metallica since replacing current Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine as their lead guitarist prior to the recording of their debut album, 1983's Kill 'em All. He and vocalist/rhythm guitarist James Hetfield are considered to be one of the greatest metal guitar duos today.
Hammett had originally wanted to have solos in Metallica's 2003 album St. Anger, but drummer and band leader Lars Ulrich and then-longtime producer Bob Rock thought that the solos did not sound right for the songs. He later himself admitted, "We tried to put in solos but they sounded like an afterthought so we left them out".
