Recieving 5 stars at the end of a song in Guitar Hero.

Star Rating is a statistic in the result screen after completing a song, showing the number of stars (usually between three and five stars in classic Guitar Hero games) the player has earned for their performance of the song they played. Stars are an integral part of all Guitar Hero games.

Starting in Guitar Hero II, the player can earn five "gold stars" by hitting every note in a song, resulting in 100% accuracy (whether or not the player breaks their combo in spaces without notes).

In Career, the number of stars also determines how much cash the player will earned from the star and getting a better Star Rating upon repeating the song will give the player the remaining cash they would have earned.

Star Rating in certain games[]

Guitar Hero World Tour[]

From Guitar Hero World Tour to Guitar Hero: Smash Hits the player is able to earn money alongside of stars. Money is earned by a variety of aspects.

From Guitar Hero: Metallica onwards there is a new addition to gameplay. This addition is the Stars Earned Meter. This meter keeps tracks of how many stars the player has earned during their performance. The star on the right shows the number of stars earned and the small meter besides it fills up as the player's score goes up. When the meter fills up the number of stars will increase by one. Also the lining around the star will be gold which shows the player hasn't missed a note. When a note is missed the gold lining disappears.

Guitar Hero 5/Band Hero[]

In Guitar Hero 5 stars are now the only reward for a performance on a song. Stars are also the only way to unlock new content in-game as money doesn't exist. Stars are still earned for a performance but are also earned by additional challenges. Also instead of a maximum of 5 stars there is an additional 6th star. This is rewarded for accomplishing a Full Combo... If a song is finished at 100% the player will get 5 stars instead of 6.

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock[]

In Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock stars remain the same as in previous GH5 Band Hero. Stars are also the main task of Quickplay+. Stars are used by players to rank up and unlock new content as it was in previous games.

In the new Quickplay+ there are Star Challenges which work the same as Gig Challenges. The only difference is that each song has challenges for all instruments instead of just one. Each song in the game that has all 4 instrument tracks has a total of 42 stars.

In Quest, the player uses the abilities of all the warriors to collect Power Stars. Each warrior's chapter has certain amount of stars which can be collected. Once the player has all eight powers they can be used to collect all 40 power stars in a song. By collecting all power stars in all songs of chapter that chapter will have been dominated.

The powers gained through Quest can be used to play the Power Challenge in Quickplay+. The power challenge uses 2 powers to gain additional stars. Depending on what powers are used some can only be used to gain as much as five stars each. By default each power in Quickplay is at level 1. By playing through the Quest the powers can evolve into level 2. When playing a song in the power challenges their is also an additional star for accomplishing a 100%.

In Guitar Hero III: Backstage Pass and Guitar Hero World Tour Mobile: Backstage Pass, Star Rating is expanded to other features of the games in addition the players' performance in gigs. The Star Rating at a the end of a gig scales between 1–5 depending on the player's overall performance in all minigames of a gig's song. In Guitar Hero III: Backstage Pass, this particular Star Rating is referred to as "Fan Reaction". The higher the Star Rating at the end of a gig, the more Fame and Cash the player will earn. If the Star Rating is below average, the player could lose Fame and a loss in profit.

  • Rehearsal level (star icon): Each song has a rehearsal level from 0 to 5 (and for each instrument in Guitar Hero World Tour Mobile: Backstage Pass). All new songs start off with a Star Rating of 0 (Rehearsal level 0) and cannot be used in gigs unless if the player "rehearses" their songs at their home (in Guitar Hero III: Backstage Pass) or at a venue (in Guitar Hero World Tour Mobile: Backstage Pass). Rehearsing a song can increase the practiced song's Star Rating/Rehearsal level, which also increases the song's difficulty level, adding more playable notes during rehearsal and in higher-starred venues.
  • Fan Reaction (red shirt fan icon): The song's performed Star Rating after a gig. See this section's overview description above for more details. Getting a 5-star Fan Reaction on a song at a gig unlocks the Legendary #9 guitar.
  • Demo Tape quality (blue cassette tape icon): This Star Rating increases by getting a Demo Tape of the song at a higher-level Studio. Getting a Demo Tape from a high-level Studios is based on the song's Rehearsal level (a Rehearsal level 4 song can receive a Demo Tape up to a 4-Star Studio). The Demo Tape will then be taken to a Record Label up to the same star level in which a player can receive a Contract after completing the task the Record Label gives the player.
  • Single Quality (gold CD icon): This Star Rating increases by getting a Single at a higher-level Studio. A Single can be acquired once the song's Demo Tape has been accepted by a Record Label. The Single can then be taken to a Record Label up to the same stars to be released in stores, which can passively make you a profit of Cash each day.

  • Guitar rehearsal level: Rehearsal level/Star Rating for Axel on Guitar minigame.
  • Drums rehearsal level: Rehearsal level/Star Rating or Lars on Drums minigame. The second song, "Go Your Own Way", already has a 5-star Drums rehearsal level upon recruiting Lars but other instruments would need to be rehearsed.
  • Bass rehearsal level: Rehearsal level/Star Rating for Judy on Bass minigame. The third song, "Rock & Roll Band", already has a 5-star Bass rehearsal level upon recruiting Judy but other instruments would need to be rehearsed.
  • Vocals rehearsal level: Rehearsal level/Star Rating for Casey on Vocals minigame. The fourth song, "1979", already has a 5-star Vocals rehearsal level upon recruiting Casey but other instruments would need to be rehearsed.
